Teen Pregnancy

Baby Think it Over
Babies may be cute and lovable, but they change your life and mean lots of responsibility. This is just one of the important messages relayed to young people in the innovative program Baby Think it Over.

This 13-session program (including an exam) is offered in local schools and in an off-campus classroom to give young people an intensive reality check to help them make independent and informed decisions about the consequences of sexual activity. The programs’ goal is to help avoid unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmissible infections.

Hands-On Experience
There are plenty of hands-on activities and video presentations to give students a real sense of the responsibility and costs of bringing up a baby. Use of the Baby Think it Over infant simulator, a lifelike, life-size baby doll with realistic computerized responses allows teens to experience some of the demands of infant care. After spending a couple of days and nights with the infant simulator, many teens come to realize that they are not yet ready to take on the pressures and responsibilities of parenting.

Sessions include the following topics and activities:

  • Peer pressure
  • Breastfeeding vs. bottle feeding
  • Trip to the mall to price out baby needs
  • Budgeting – cost of living on your own
  • Infant development
  • Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
  • Sudden Infant Death (SIDS) and Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS)
  • Safety tips and child car seats
