Helping Keep Youth Safe
Many of our young people struggle to leave negative (or even destructive) lifestyles behind. There are times when this challenge is too great and they run away from their foster families or group homes. It is the job of our Outreach Worker to find them in the community, ensure that they are safe and encourage them to return to Marymound.
Marymound believes our care and responsibility does not end at our doorway. The Outreach Worker fulfills a key role in ensuring the safety of our young people.
Working with other program staff, the Outreach Worker gets to know our young people and the places they are likely to go. Working closely with Child and Family Services, the Winnipeg Police Service, community contacts and Marymound staff, the Outreach Worker locates and ensures youth are safe. If the situation is dangerous she/he will coordinate with CFS and the police to bring the youth back to Marymound or to another place of safety. At all times, the safety and well being of the youth is the foremost concern.
Marymound is a member of the Winnipeg Outreach Network. Our Outreach Worker works with others in similar positions from other organizations to coordinate support to all children and youth at risk on our streets. By working together and sharing resources the network tries to provide a safety net for all kids, not just those in care.
