Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

Horses may not be “man’s best friend” but they certainly are turning out to be valuable and therapeutic friends for many young people in the unique Stable Path Program here at Marymound.

No Riding Required
Young people learn a great deal through this experiential program by participating in activities with the horses and then processing or discussing feelings, behaviours and patterns. There is no actual riding involved in Stable Path.

Marymound’s specially trained and E.A.G.A.L.A. ( Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association)  certified therapist works with youth and families, alongside a professional horseperson, introducing young people to the animals, encouraging them to interact with them and observe their behaviours and reactions. Horses are highly sensitive to body language and their responses to the youth are often real eye-openers.

Young people can benefit from the experiential learning offered by Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, especially those with issues such as aggressive behaviour, histories of abuse or relationship issues and who have shown resistance to traditional counselling.

Each session is one hour in length and the program runs for 10 – 12 weeks throughout the year.
