Vale’s operations in Thompson, Manitoba have committed a donation of $15,000 to Marymound’s Futures Program for young parents in Thompson. Vale is a global mining company with operations on five continents.

The contribution will see $5,000 each year for three years going to this program that supports young parents through programs including parenting skills, nutrition training, stay in school programming, support groups, school readiness programs and much more. Futures programs are always well attended and have helped countless young parents learn, grow, mature and move towards healthy independent living while maintaining the family unit.

“This will go a long way to support our programs at Futures,” said Marymound CEO, Ian Hughes. “We are grateful to Vale not only for the financial contribution but for their recognition of the importance of our programming in the community.”

In honour of Marymound’s 100 years of caring for Manitoba
children and families, the City of Winnipeg is bestowing a special
honour on the social services agency.

Ord Street in West Kildonan borders Marymound School’s yard has
been re-named Marymound Way.

“It’s a wonderful tribute to the Sisters of the Good Shepherd who
founded Marymound in 1911 and to the many people who have worked here over the century,” said Ian Hughes, Marymound’s CEO. “We feel very proud to be recognized in this way.”

No homes or businesses have addresses on Ord Street so the name change will not affect any local residents.

A special ceremony celebrating the change is scheduled for September 10 at the 100th Anniversary Reunion & Culture Day.
