Our History, our Present, and our Future

In April, 1911 five Sisters of the Good Shepherd came from Montreal to Winnipeg at the request of Judge Daly, founder of Winnipeg’s Juvenile Court. The Sisters came to Winnipeg to work with women and girls in need.

The Sisters of the Good Shepherd is an Order with a long history dating back to the 1800s in France. Saint Mary Euphrasia was largely responsible for laying the foundation of the “Good Shepherd Philosophy.” She dedicated her life to assisting women with no place to go and who were at risk of exploitation.

Throughout the years, Marymound has evolved to meet the needs of the community it serves. Today, Marymound offers a range of therapeutic and educational services to young people both male and female.

Marymound continues to innovate in its programs and services. Recent developments include the creation of a Sexually Exploited Youth Program. The school program has developed Student Work Experience Educational Program (SWEEP) and Marymound North has a treatment foster care program in Thompson.

Read about these initiatives in our newsletter.

Plans are also in place to expand into the area of assessment for young people requiring out of home placement. Using  the professional expertise of the staff at Marymound, we will offer professional development, internships as well as other training to community social service agencies.
