Front entrance
Marymound School Provides a specialized education program to children and adolescents from the Managed Care program as well as the broader community. While it is a private school, it receives referrals from all school divisions in Winnipeg and surrounding areas. Classroom Classes are small with an average class size of 14 students. A teacher and an educational assistant use a range of media and techniques to adapt the provincial curriculum to meet different learning styles. When a student first comes to Marymound School, a Resource Consultant assesses the student’s academic needs to tailor his/her learning experience. Occupational Therapy Room Marymound school has a state of the art occupational therapy room used for sensory integration work. Students having difficulty integrating taste, touch, smell, hearing and visual input can go to the room for a short period to either calm or stimulate their senses. This type of therapy has a huge impact on a student’s ability to perform in class. The technique involves the use of various swings and sound equipment as well as balls and pillows. Student Work Experience Education Program - SWEEP SWEEP gives students at Marymound School the opportunity to receive credit for course work they do in preparation for vocational experience. Work placement is also a component of the program. Students with an interest in mechanics and working with their hands benefit from the bicycle maintenance technical education program. Other work experiences include snow removal for area seniors, planting and harvesting in Marymound's Community Garden or placements in neighbourhood businesses such as Eastern Chrysler. Drama and Art and Music
Marymound has a drama, art, and music program as well as an art therapist. These disciplines embrace the creativity of students. Students are involved in a variety of projects and performance-based activities throughout the school year.
Secure Living Some young people striving to overcome addiction, strong feelings about suicide or other severe behaviour that puts them at risk begin their stay at Marymound in a home-like, secure setting. Here, as in all of the managed care settings at Marymound, the young person has access to therapeutic and psychiatric care and benefits from a highly structured, supervised living arrangement. Community Group Living Marymound provides a number of community group living settings where young people participate in community life through various outings and activities. The young people here may attend Marymound School or a community school depending on their needs. Treatment Foster Care A variety of settings within the Marymound treatment foster care program offer young people family based care which meets their particular needs. In addition to family-based care, Marymound also offers Independent Options Program and Baby Steps Program. Crisis Stabilization Program A six-place unit for girls designed to assist them and their families during acute psycho-social crisis. The goal of this program is to stabilize the crisis situation and prevent young people from moving into other care arrangements. This program is part of the Manitoba Youth Emergency Crisis Stabilization System. Youth Addictions Stabilization Unit This safe, secure facility provides young people severly affected by substance abuse the opportunity to stabilize physically in order to consider options for treatment services. Marymound delivers this service under the provisions of Manitoba Health and Healthy Living's Youth Drug Stabilization (Support for Parents) Act. For further details and referral information visit our programs and services page. The pool on the Marymound main campus is well used by students and residents on hot sunny days. Marymound also operates a camp located on Lake Winnipeg.
Sexual Abuse Treatment Program The trauma experienced after sexual abuse can be overwhelming for young people and their families. At Marymound, the therapists in the Sexual Abuse Treatment Program provide child and family-centred therapy in a safe, welcoming environment.
Stable Path uses Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) to assist young people with issues such as aggressive behaviour, histories of abuse or relationship issues. EAP is a growing therapeutic technique that uses horses in specifically directed activities to help individuals gain insight and develop strategies to address challenges. The program is seeing great results. To make a referral or learn more about the program contact Juanita Clayton at 479-6009. The Fall 2006 newsletter also explains more about the program.
